ACHIEVEMENTS & MILESTONES
- Made the protection of migrants’ rights a visible issue in international fora, including the UN Commission on Human Rights, the World Summit on Social Development in Copenhagen and the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995.
- In 1998, launched the Global Campaign for the Ratification of the UN Migrant Workers Convention, which brought together 14 major intergovernmental agencies and NGO networks based in Geneva.
- Produced Achieving Dignity: a Campaigner’s Handbook, the first handbook for an international treaty to help governments, policymakers, NGOs, and activists promote the UN Migrant Workers Convention. The handbook is available in English, French, Italian and Spanish.
- Advocated for the creation of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants.
- Facilitated the inter-regional NGO preparations and participation in the World Conference Against Racism (WCAR), held in Durban, South Africa in 2001.
- Post-Durban, MRI published the NGO Platform of Action on the Follow-up to the WCAR. The Platform proposes broader civil society involvement, recommends concrete measures for WCAR follow-up, and incorporates the global fight against racism, racial discrimination and xenophobia into the larger migrants’ rights advocacy agenda.
- Supports and coordinates migrant NGO participation in activities of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) (now the Human Rights Council); the International Organization for Migration (IOM); the International Labour Organization (ILO); World Trade Organization; World Social Forum, etc.
- Assists in the development and connection of grassroots organizations working for migrants’ rights through strategic support, information sharing, capacity building, networking, technical assistance, and international advocacy.
- Organized the Global Community Dialogue on Migration, Development and Human Rights, on 13-15 September 2006 as a parallel event to the UN High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development in New York.
- Co-organized a parallel civil society event during the first Global Forum on Migration and Development in Brussels, Belgium in July 2007.
