Civil Society Preparations for the
General Forum on Migration and Development 2008

Welcome to Migrants Rights International (MRI)’s webpage for civil society preparations for the GFMD 2008!

The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) is an annual inter-governmental forum in which issues related to migration and development are being discussed. The first GFMD took place in Brussels, Belgium in 2007.

The second GFMD is scheduled to take place in Manila, Philippines from October 27 – 30, 2008.

Civil society organizations are very concerned about the way that the GFMD has been developing. While the GFMD is an international forum to discuss migration issues that affect migrants’ rights, it has so far been resistant to taking into considering existing international law and principles on human rights and migrants’ rights. In addition, civil society participation has so far been very limited.

Migrants Rights International (MRI) along with other civil society groups is planning civil society mobilizations during, and leading up to, the GFMD in Manila, including a civil society parallel event concurrent to the GFMD.

More information will be uploaded onto this site in the weeks to come.

To ask questions, to receive email updates, to send us documents to be posted onto this site, or to join the email discussion group on civil society strategy on GFMD 2008, write MRI at migrantsrightsinternational@gmail.com.
